Week 16 - Summary & Evaluation.

3rd May

Hello,

Now I have my book finished I have a few more pieces of work to finish. I need to finish off my evaluation and my summary.

I have made a great start on both of these and am hoping to have these done today so that I can double check everything and check over my other hand-in.

It has been quite a challenge to work towards two projects but this has helped me to learn to manage my time and focus on deadlines. I am happy with the outcome and how I have personally worked as I have spent a lot of time independently learning and working, which has been challenging but rewarding.

So, I am almost done and it feels a bit weird, I CANT BELIEVE IT IS ALMOST OVER.

Week 15 - My book has just been delivered! WOOP!

27th April

WOOOP! I am so pleased with how my book has turned out. It was like Christmas day opening it this morning! :)

As I opened the box up I was so nervous yet so excited I could not get the wrapping off quick enough! As I opend up the box I had to close my eyes with anticipation and I was so overwhelmed when I opened them, the cover looks great! I am really happy with the overall look and feel to the book. The inside pages have come out perfectly and I'm glad there are no major faults with the printing!! I have also triple checked the written work inside and I cant spot any mistakes so that is great news, all in all, its turned out brilliantly.

Each of the pages have turned out so well and It is quite overwhelming seeing how my hard work has paid off. I could not be happier with my end result, I think the book looks professional and stylish which is exactly what I was aiming for. The appearance of the book gives off a contemporary yet creative feel. I am going to be quite said to hand it in!! I love it that much.

If I could change anything I would only make some small additions to the book. For example, I would have liked to add a few more characters and a step-by-step guide to some of the looks. This would give the book more bulk which I believe it would benefit from. But other than that I am incredibly happy, I think it works really well for the target market.

Im off now, to show it off and get some feedback!

Talk soon,

Francesca Rose :) x

Week 14 - Just sent my book to be PUBLISHED!!

19th April

So, today has been quite a strange day!! I feel a bit empty now my book has been sent off, but I am SO excited to see it printed!!

I spent the morning going through each page with the graphic designer to check for mistakes and faults, I am glad we did as there were a few changes to be made. However, overall it was pretty much ready and after an hour or so of double checking, I was happy to send it.

I opted for express delivery as I do not want to risk not receiving the book in time. Although it did cost me an extra £26, eeek!! I am so poor now but this book is so worth it!!

Whilst this is being printed I am going to work on going over my reflective log and completing my summary!

Week 13 - Just received my pictures :)

17th April

AaAaAaA!!!!

I received my pictures from Tom yesterday, he sent them last night and they took an hour or so to download in the folder. I was super excited to see them edited!

I am so pleased with the outcome though, I have a great set of images, they look so professional and creative, I cant wait to place them in my book :) I am really pleased with the final images although I would have like to have seen more edited as I only saw a select few! The ones I have are  great though, very happy!

So, now I am able to put them in my book, it wont take me long to get this all finished now!! I am meeting up with the graphic designer to decide the running of the photos and how they will look in a series.

I will speak soon!

30th March

Here is a preview for my Aphrodite shoot, it went really well today, apart from the model was a little later than I wanted but we managed to get everything done in time. The shooting time was cut down but we definitely had enough time to get some great shots for my book! So, Im pretty happy!

Week 11 - Image Preview of Medusa & Basilisk

Hey everyone :)

I've been working hard on my FMP, a makeup book inspired by Greek Mythology. I recently got some preview images of 2 of my characters, Medusa and the Basilisk.

I would really appreciate your feedback and comments!

Hope you like my work!

Medusa

I really like this picture, I like the layout and think it shows off  the makeup and hair styling really well. My favourite elements in the picture are the cheekbones and the eye makeup, I really like how the colours have come out on camera.

Medusa

This is my favourite image from the Medusa collection, I am so pleased with this photograph, I think its really strong. I love the composition and I love how the makeup and hair look!

Week 10 - Intro completed!

22nd March

I have just written my introduction for my book :) Have a read, let me know what you think!

Make-up imagery that is captivating and intriguing is usually something which is out of the ordinary or has not been seen before. The concept of this make-up book was created on the basis of this idea: to create something captivating which intrigues and excites the reader. Many of the make-up books which are on the market seem to fail to open the eye to intense make-up imagery and instead, showcase images of make-up which have been seen before. This too, with the theme of this book.

A gap was seen in the market which related history, art and make-up and how history can be shown through creative mediums, such as make-up. So, it was decided to design and create a book which has been inspired by history and historical characters, taking main elements of these characters and using them to develop make-up plans. The research process for this book has been enjoyable and very fulfilling, it has led to beautiful images inspired by historical stories and art work.

It has taken me a lot of time and a lot of cutting down to get it down to this and I think it reads well.

Week 10 - Progress Presentation

21st March

So, today is the day of my progress presentation! I have just got back from uni and so I thought this would be the best time to update my blog!

Sharon and Clementine seemed pleased with my progress so far, we discussed how I have done and what I have achieved so far. I was quite pleased as some of my peers had not had any of their images back and I have had a look at 2 lots so far, only previews though! And so, I seemed further along, which was quite reassuring as I feel like all I am doing at the moment is working...

We decided also, that my layout may need to be shrunk as my images are similar it seems that a double page is enough as opposed to two double spreads. I do agree with this as the book may become very repetitive which is not what i want. it would be nice to have some variety and originality within the book.

I think their feedback was useful in developing my book for the best, I was able to agree with what they said and it helps with my outcome.

I am especially pleased with the response they gave to my images (Medusa & Basilisk). They were supportive and constructive with what they said, which was helpful.

Great advice and support!

Week 9 - Basilisk photo shoot.

16th March

Today has run quite smoothly. I had a bit of a later start this morning, met with the model at around half 9. It took a little bit longer to do the make-up today as there was a lot of stencilling and layering to do but we managed to be ready for Tom at about half 12 again. So, we were lucky enough to have plenty of time to work on the shoot and get some great shots!!

I am happy with the application as I think it looks creative and different, I think that people will like the look because it is different to conventional make-up. I think the stencilling gives it something fun and interesting to look at. I used fishnets to create a scaly pattern on the lips, which worked really well. I would have like to have had the scales on more of the lip but I did not want to smudge the ones that were already in place.

Again, I am pleasantly surprised with how today has worked out. It seems to have worked really well, I get on well with Tom and we seem to manage to crack on with the shoot and create something really exciting.

I also think having a professional photographer is so much better than trying to create the photography yourself. It is great to see a photographer working as I am able to pick up tips and see how to work together. It is so much easier to have somebody to take care of the photographs, and to have them edit them to the best they can as opposed to me not being able to do as good a job.

I am looking forward to seeing all of the photos when they are edited.

I'm just about to schedule my next shoots, I'm just waiting to hear back from the models and I will go from there.

In the meantime, I am going to get on with designs and written work, so that when I'm done with the shoots I am able to put the book together quickly so that the book has enough time to be published.

I will update soon,

Francesca Rose :)

Week 9 - Medusa shoot

15th March

Today is the first day of my shoots for my book!! I have started with Medusa as I had finished her design first and I am pleased with the results!!

I started by meeting the model at 9 this morning and then prepared her for the shoot. I primed her skin and made sure her eyebrows were ready for the shoot as they are a prominent feature in this look. I then applied the make-up which took about 2 hours and then did the hair, which took about an hour. We were ready to shoot by about half 12 which worked well as Tom had to be finished by 3 so we had plenty of time to try lots of looks out, and we did not have to rush.

Throughout the shoot we went through different lighting effects and composition of the model. As well as a mixture of close ups, portraits and landscape images. I am pleased with how the pictures look on screen but I cant wait to see them edited and printed.

Tom is hoping to get the pictures back to me within about 2 weeks, so in the meantime I'm going to carry on with my designs and book writing! I'm so excited to see them completed!

I am happy with the way it has gone today and I hope my next 7 shoots are just as successful becuase this has been enjoyable and I have learnt a lot about working with other people.

I have got my next shoot with Tom tomorrow for my 'Basilisk' shoot and I have it planned and tested so tomorrow should hopefully run smoothly. I am hoping to go for the same times as today and finish by 3!

Week 9 - Test shooting for Medusa shoot!!

14th March

I have worked on some test shoots this week, just working on testing some makeup looks for Medusa. I worked on the hair and makeup as I have a shoot scheduled soon!! I cant wait.

These pictures were taken on my phone, sorry for the poor quality!

I like the overall look of these but there are definitely some elements that do not work. I am not going to include the V shape on the forehead as I feel this gives more of a superhero feel as opposed to Medusa.

I like the cheekbones, I especially like the grading in colour and I think it looks good going from harsh to soft. I also am particularly happy with the colour range and how they look on camera, I was worried the light green would look to yellow but it looks fine.

I think I am also going to thicken the eyebrow line and give it a sharper, straighter look instead of it being to soft and curly!

I am going to keep the cheeks and eye colours the same but I am going to get rid of the V on the forehead and the softness in the eyebrows!!

Chat soon,

Francesca Rose :)

Week 8 - Book Layout!!

9th March

Hi,

I have just finished a meeting with the graphic designer and we have finally decided on a great layout for the book. I want to keep it simple and clean, to give it a modern and contemporary feel! I am happy with what we have chosen, and I think it works really well.

It is a great opportunity to be working with a graphic designer as he is able to translate what I want onto the  page, he is helping with page layout and concept, as well as titles and fonts etc.

I find it easy to speak to him and get a great finished look for the overall book. I have seen a few page designs and I am super pleased with how they are coming along. I just need to finish my photo shoots and written pieces to put into the book.

I'm just finishing a plan for my presentation, but will upload a layout soon!! :)

Week 8 - Schedule!

7th March

Hey,

I have just worked out dates for when I need my book completed by, I have decided to aim for the 14th April. This date allows me plenty of time to receive the book and if anything is drastically wrong it also gives me enough time to resend the book.

Now, I have a deadline to work towards I feel a little more motivated and excited about the outcome, I cannot wait until its all finished! :) woop!

So, I'm off to do some written work now, as I only have a few weeks left to perfect this book, eek!

Update soon,

Week 7 - Medusa Inspiration

For my FMP, I'm creating a book inspired by mystical characters within Greek Mythology. One of the characters that I have been looking at today is Medusa :)

I'm really excited to experiment make-up looks and create a Medusa look. I'm hoping to give the look an editorial/fashion feel as opposed to a character make-up. Here are some images I have found that have inspired my creativity!!

I love all the different elements that have been enhanced in each of these pictures! I find imagery like this really inspiring and I cant wait to start designing this look!!

Hair Ideas

For the hair, I really want to create a twisted, snake sort of look as opposed to putting snakes in the hair. These are the pictures that I am hoping to merge together to make a great hair design!!

Week 6 - Notes from class!

24th February

Notes from Jane and Elizabeth's lectures! Great notes for staying professional and keeping images looking professional and exciting.

  1. Test shoot all the time, TEST, TEST, TEST!
  2. Keep a record of all shoots, this is a good way to keep track of work experience and opportunities.
  3. Keep a business card on you at all times, you never know when you will need it!
  4. Keep note of crew name, date, time and location for films and shoots.
  5. Try to title images or shoot ideas to give focus.
  6. Try to create atmosphere in the picture, movement is a great way to do this!!
  7. Take inspiration from other creatives, especially photographers, this is what all designers are doing.
  8. Always think about content and context! whats in the foreground, whats in the background, why? what does everything say, what do the clothing items say.
  9. Images can be made from just picking one feature on the face, for example, the eyes, lips, cheeks.
  10. Cropping shots can make them more appealing and interesting.
  11. Give direction to your model, or a theme/idea. Its a good way to get focused for a shoot.
  12. Think about what you are trying to create with the image...what do you want it to say? What does it actually say?
  13. Think about colour, lighting and make-up.
  14. Create a variety of images, play around with the mouth being open and closed.
  15. If creating focus on the face you can use something to cover the hair. A hat, lampshade or scarf are great for allowing the focus to stay on the make-up.
Great advice :)

Week 5 - Tutorial with Clementine

23rd February

So, today I had a tutorial/chat with Clementine about my workload and progress so far, I am happy with how I am doing., I havent felt this organised in any of my projects and I am really pleased I have been so motivated and dedicated.

I went over what I want to achieve and Clementine suggested dropping some characters, as 8 may be too much and so we decided on 6 as this is an equal number and there is still quite a lot of work to be done. It also works out a lot better as I think Cyclops may would have been hard to get to look right and not over the top.

The 6 chosen characters are:

  • Hades - God of the underworld.
  • Medusa
  • Basilisk
  • The Minotaur
  • Aphrodite - Goddess of love.
  • Ares - God of war.
I am happy with the decision and this now gives me more drive to get things completed, I am pleased that the amount of photo shoots has dropped as this allows me more time to focus on completing/creating my make up designs!

Woop! I better make sure these 6 are the best!

Week 6 - Test shooting with Tom (the photographer)

21st February

So, Today I have been test shooting with Tom so I can see how well we work together before I ask him to work on my whole book! Today we did some shooting for a portfolio shot that I want to do! Its pop art  inspired and I'm really pleased with the make-up, although it took 3 hours (!)

But yes, today worked really well, got to know Tom and he seems perfect for what I want. He has said that he is happy to do all 8 shoots and do all of the editing for me! so, that has worked really well. We are going to mete later in the week to go over what is needed for the shoots, what I want from the shoots and how we can work together etc.

I am really pleased that I decided to do a test shoot first as it gives me a chance to find out if Tom is the right person to help with my book and I am certain I have made the right decision. I am looking forward to the rest of the shoots.

I am just about to research into the sort of look I want from the photos so I can give Tom some visuals to look at. So, I'm off, but will update soon!

Week 5 - Tutorial with Elizabeth Barnett!

17th February

Uni went pretty well today! I had a drop in session with Elizabeth Barnett, one of our new specialist lecturers! Much appreciated :) Her keen eye and exciting outlook on makeup helped to motivate me with broadening my portfolio work. It was nice to discuss with her what she thought about my portfolio and my FMP idea! She seemed quite interested by my FMP and it was nice to see her reaction. We discussed what sort of makeup I want to include and what characters I have chosen (I need to finalise my selection). I really enjoyed explaining my project and ideas, and cant wait to see it all coming together! :)

Elizabeth has worked in the fashion department of Elle, and beauty departments of British Vogue,Harper’s, InStyle, Happy and Good Housekeeping magazines as a stylist, journalist and beauty director where she capitalised on her fashion degree to style celebrities and models for her glamorous beauty shoots. Her specialty is finding the ultimate combination of dress, jewellery and hair and makeup for events and weddings. (http://www.styleoncall.co.uk/about.html)

We discussed my previous selection of work and went through the images which I have on my makeup facebook page. She liked many of the shots and gave me advice and tips on how to enhance/edit my images as well as ideas for re-shooting. We agreed on adapting a previous look that I have done, which is inspired by the 1920's. Which I will be shooting next week! I have a great model, cant wait!

Week 3 - Sourcing Models and photographers!

I have spent most of the day so far going over new ideas and sourcing models for my portfolio and FMP. Its going pretty well, I have got 2 shoots provisionally sorted for next week (good stuff!) and hopefully I want to get one more sorted! That shouldn't be too hard!!

At the moment I am just planning some test shooting and seeing how well I work with others. I have decided to try and use just one photographer for my whole collection of photos as I want to keep them looking consistent and similar. It is also a lot easier to keep the communication with just one person, as opposed to a mixture of people. So, I have added some photographers on ModelMayhem and spoke to other contacts to see who is interested and available. I am hoping to work with someone who is local to me as it will mean I can keep in contact easier and meet up more, to go over ideas etc.

I am also scouting models at the moment to see who looks like they would be suitable for my book. I have been using ModelMayhem a lot as its quick and easy to find suitable models!! Communication is easy and its easy to approach people!! PERFECT!

So, fingers crossed I hear back soon :) I will let you know what happens!

Week 2 - Beginning Schedule (will probably change)!

30th January

This is my schedule from my project proposal, I used this as a way of keeping to deadlines and knowing what I need to be completed. It is a great way of keeping track of my progress and not forgetting anything important that needs to be done! :)

Production Schedule
Deadline for the project is around May 2nd. Start date is 17th January, therefore there are 15 weeks in which to complete the book.
Week 1 – Plan and execute Make-up and hair designs for all 8 characters. Source models and photographers to work with.
Week 2 – Execute 2 photo shoots. Write introduction.
Week 3 – Execute 2 photo shoots. Begin compiling chapters.
Week 4 – Execute 2 photo shoots. Carry on with chapters.
Week 5 – Execute 2 photo shoots. Carry on with chapters.
Week 6 – Write introduction for the book, carry on with chapters, sourcing imagery.
Week 7 – Have all images returned by this week, ready to be used in the book.
Week 8 – Complete Chapters ready for printing.
Week 9 – Send for printing.
Week 13-14 – Book should be printed and returned.

I think I may have to push some of the shoots back as I need to buy products, test shoot and complete designs, but I will make sure I keep up with the written work instead! There is so much to do, at least this gives me an idea on where to start!

Week 1 - THIS IS IT!

So, as a make-up fanatic, I think its time that I share my make-up interests with you guys!!

I have been studying make-up for 5 Years now and I love it, more than ever! I started at college studying performing arts, which I was really into, but it was only until we had a business project that I was able to see other sides to the industry. Soon, I was hooked on Make-up design and enrolled myself on a 2 year course, covering all aspects.

We looked at many types of make-up, including:

Period Work-1920's

Period Work 1940's

Fantasy & Bald Caps

Fantasy

Special Effects

I then went on to study Make-up and Hair Design at Southampton Solent University for 3 years and am now in my third year. Just about to properly begin my Final Major Project and Professional Portfolio Construction.

This blog will document my inspiration, ideas and thought process to do with my FMP and I will show you all my final outcomes :) Please comment with any ideas and feedback that you have, as this will be a great help!

Thanks for looking!
